A warm light can make a living room feel cosy and inviting. A neutral light can make a kitchen feel cleaner and more functional. On the other hand, using overly cool lighting throughout your home can make a carefully designed interior feel harsh and clinical.
So, what colour temperature should you choose for your Singapore home?

What Is Colour Temperature?
Colour temperature describes the appearance or tone of light and is measured in Kelvin (K). It does not refer to how hot the light bulb becomes.
The general rule is simple:
Lower Kelvin = warmer, more yellow light
Higher Kelvin = cooler, whiter or more bluish light

1. Living Room: 3000K–4000K

For a warm and comfortable interior, 3000K is a popular choice.
If you prefer a cleaner and more contemporary appearance, 4000K can work well too.

You can also consider dimmable lighting if you want to change the atmosphere throughout the day.
For example:
Daytime: brighter lighting
Evening: softer, dimmed lighting
The right lighting design should work around how you actually use the room, rather than simply following a fixed rule.
2. Bedroom: 2700K–3000K
Your bedroom should feel comfortable and relaxing. This is why warmer colour temperatures are generally more suitable than cool daylight.
2700K creates a particularly warm and intimate atmosphere, while 3000K gives you a slightly cleaner appearance without becoming too cool.
For bedside reading, consider using a dedicated bedside lamp rather than relying entirely on bright overhead lighting.
Recommended: 2700K–3000K
Avoid: Using very cool 5000K–6500K lighting as the main bedroom lighting unless there is a specific reason for doing so.
3. Kitchen: 4000K
The kitchen is a working space. You need to see what you are cutting, cooking, cleaning and preparing.
This makes 4000K neutral white a practical choice for many Singapore kitchens. It provides a clear and balanced appearance without the strong bluish tone associated with daylight lighting.

This is one of the most common questions homeowners ask. The answer is neither is universally better. They simply create different effects.

Hotel-inspired ambience
Richer wood tones
Softer evening lighting
Choose 4000K if you want:
A cleaner appearance
Better visual clarity
A brighter-looking environment
More functional lighting

Can You Mix Different Colour Temperatures?
Yes — but there is an important distinction. You generally want to avoid randomly mixing different colour temperatures between the same types of fixtures.
For example: One 3000K downlight beside a 4000K downlight, this can look inconsistent.
However, different lighting layers can intentionally use slightly different temperatures.
For example: 3000K downlights + 2700K cove lighting. This can create depth and warmth without making the room look inconsistent.
The principle is: Keep the same fixture type consistent, but use different lighting layers intentionally.
What Is CRI and Why Does It Matter?
Colour temperature isn't the only specification you should consider. Another important factor is CRI — Colour Rendering Index.
CRI measures how accurately a light source reproduces colours compared with a reference light source.
A light with good colour rendering can make:

Wood look richer

Artwork appear closer to its intended colour
For residential interiors, CRI 90+ is a useful target when colour appearance matters, while CRI 80+ is a common baseline for general residential applications.

Does Higher Kelvin Mean Brighter Light?
Not necessarily. This is a common misconception.
A 10W 3000K LED and a 10W 6500K LED can consume the same amount of electricity.
Colour temperature determines the appearance of the light, not automatically how much electricity the light uses.
If your room genuinely needs more light, look at:
Lumens
Number of fixtures
Beam angle
Fixture placement
Reflective surfaces

Don't simply change from 3000K to 6500K because you think it will solve a brightness problem.
